Since a picture is worth a 1000 words, I’ve created this visual to help tell my story. Understanding our True Nature and the meaning of “eternal life,” allows us to relax and fully embrace the few precious moments we get to experience in this world.
I believe we are all Eternal Spiritual Beings on an amazing human adventure—in this world but not of this world. When I reflect on this idea, I feel a sense of joy. What a f#cking relief! Like a load of bricks lifted off my chest. Why? Because to be eternal means no beginning and no end. Forget about the limited notion of birth and death, which only causes anxiety, fear, and worry. What we really experience is an entry and an exit from this temporary world of form. Like an eternal Ray of Light—we’re all just passing through.
Why do I say this experience is brief—just a few precious moments? Because in the grand scheme of things, we’re only here for the blink of an eye. Scientists say the Universe has been unfolding for nearly 14 billion years. The problem with these huge numbers is that they’re difficult to wrap our heads around. As a result, we don’t give it much thought. They may as well say a gazillion years!! To give this number some meaning, I would like to boil it down. Most of us can grasp a million of something—a million dollars, a million people, or a million years. It’s a lot, but almost countable. Now consider that one billion is a thousand million! Now multiply that by 14! The 75, 85, or 100 years that we inhabit this planet is NOTHING. The purpose of this exercise is to inspire a sense of urgency. We need to awaken to our True Nature and stop wasting these precious moments. This life is short—really, really short!
So, what do I mean by our True Nature? I must confess, I was trying to tell this story without using the G-word. I’m well aware of how uncomfortable this word makes many of us feel. I can relate. This was me not long ago—putting up a wall of resistance if someone would mention God in conversation. I would actually feel a tightness in my chest as I would search for an exit.
I have a theory why so many of us have this knee-jerk reaction. Although I’m not a religious guy, I do have memories of my Catholic upbringing. As children, we were taught that God was a father-like figure, who lives up in the clouds somewhere. You know the image—an old man with a flowing white beard, sitting in a throne, watching every move you make. This God was also very judgmental, rewarding the good and punishing the bad. Obviously, I can only speak for myself. However, since there are more than 2.5 billion Christians on this planet, I’m guessing I’m not the only one who has heard this story.
In a way, I understand. Maybe this authoritarian God in the image of man is necessary for children. I’m a father. I know how a little fear can be a good tool for control. But come-on, we’re not kids anymore!
So, here’s my theory—as we mature and have the freedom to think for ourselves, we come to realize this story doesn’t work anymore. We begin to feel like we were misled or deceived. Does anyone remember how it felt the day you were told that Santa Claus was not real? This information usually comes from an older friend or sibling. I remember it vividly. My first reaction was embarrassment. I was humiliated. After that—I was angry with my parents. I felt betrayed. How could you let me believe this story for so long??
Please, don’t take this out of context. I am not comparing Santa to God. However, maybe when we hear the G-word now as adults, on a subconscious level we still feel betrayed or uneasy about the ‘God-story’ we were taught as children.
Before I go any further, I would like to explain how I define God. I know God as my Life Force—the vibrating Energy that animates every cell in my body. A Living Presence within. And this Life Force flows through all of Creation. This is what connects us all! I believe at birth, we are pulled from the invisible world of pure energy, and deposited into this world of form. Spirit embodies humankind. And when these bodies finally wear-out, this eternal Life Force simply returns to its Source.
I promise, you don’t need to be religious to embrace this awareness. Hell, you don’t even need to be spiritual. Einstein is famous for saying, this is physics—not philosophy! Maybe it would help if I mix-in a little science with my spirituality. For example, doctors say that between 21-30 days after conception a spark of life appears from nowhere. It’s often referred to as a heartbeat, even though the fetal heart is not developed until 8 weeks.
Have you ever heard anyone say that the human body is 99% empty space? I remember reading this several times during my studies—thinking it was a crazy notion. Seriously? I own a mirror. I can see and feel my solid body. What a joke. I didn’t really understand this fact until I heard a physicist explain it like this—if the nucleus of an atom were the size of a peanut, its outer shell would be the size of a baseball stadium. WOW, that’s a lot of empty space!
To use the word “empty” is not really accurate. Scientists say this space is filled with a vibrating energy field. And this energy field connects all matter. It wasn’t until the invention of the high-powered microscope in the 1600s that scientists were able to prove this theory. YES—science is finally catching up with what the spiritual masters have been teaching for thousands of years. We are all connected by this vibrating energy. Call “it” whatever you like, but please don’t deny its existence.
Okay, one final scientific tidbit. Have you heard of The First Law of Thermodynamics? Sounds complicated, but it simply states that energy cannot be destroyed—it can only change in form. Since I am calling this energy my Life Force, this also supports the idea of eternal life.
Although I’m optimistic in these turbulent times, I do feel a sense of urgency. We need more awakened beings on this planet NOW. Unfortunately, most of us are sleepwalking through life, exclusively identified with this world of form. When living from this limited perspective, we are guaranteed to suffer. All that is composed must decompose. We are clinging to stuff that has a very short shelf life—including our bodies. Some of the symptoms of this dis-ease include anxiety, fear, worry, anger, greed, and depression.
I know I’m painting a gloomy picture, but we all have the power to choose. A simple shift in awareness is all that is required. Awakening changes everything! We can transform from being sleepwalkers who think life’s a bitch and then you die, to being conscious players in this Game of Life. Let’s not waste another moment. You can AWAKEN from this dream-state today. Please—when you hear the call, don’t hit the snooze button.
When it’s time for us to exit this planet, the veil will be lifted, and we will remember our True Nature. Many of us will think, if only I knew. Good news, this won’t be you! Because now you know the secret. And you don’t have to wait for your “deathbed” to awaken. You can awaken NOW while you still have plenty of time to play.
Life was meant to be a fun, light-hearted adventure—full of joy, love, and abundance. Since we’re only here for a minute, we should learn to enjoy this temporary world of form without clinging to it. Feelings of depression and despair will soon be replaced by feelings of love and compassion. This occurs naturally when we remember our oneness. This is HUGE! When we begin to see ourselves in the eyes of "others"—this world will quickly evolve.
